Universal Technical Institute unveils plans for San Antonio’s trades campus

Students will be able to apply to UTI–San Antonio in the fall of 2025.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonians will now have new opportunities to start an alternative career path after high school.

The Universal Technical Institute is opening a new campus on the northwest side in the spring of 2026, pending all regulatory approvals.

UTI-San Antonio will offer several programs in HVAC, aviation, welding, electrical and many others.

The campus will occupy more than 50,000 square feet at 5776 Stemmons Drive and will accept hundreds of students into their selective programs.

“UTI plays an important role in society, by educating a skilled collar worker. So, when you think about students coming up and choosing whether they’re going to go to college, a four-year path, or if they’re going to go into a career. We’re giving them alternative pathways,” Tracy Lorenz Division President of Universal Technical Institute said.

UTI has 16 campuses nationwide with San Antonio named as the fourth campus in the Lone Star State. But, UTI-San Antonio will be the first-ever campus dedicated to skilled trades programs.

“Texas is experiencing growing demand for skilled professionals in fields like HVAC, aviation, welding, and electrical – making San Antonio the perfect place for us to try this new campus out, Lorenz said.

The trades program that will be offered at UTI-San Antonio are currently in need of certified workers. Lorenz said UTI will help these students find jobs once they complete the training and on average, students receive two to three job offers shortly after certification.

“One good thing about our programs versus a traditional four-year path is students are able to come in and complete programs, whether it’s from seven months to 15 months, giving them an opportunity to get out into the workforce much quicker than if they would just take a traditional path,” Lorenz said.

UTI also provides student resources like admissions help, financial aid and career services.

Individual financial representatives are also available to help student based on their specific needs. Lorenz said the cost of each program depends on the length of the certification process with aviation being one of the longest. The certifications at UTI-San Antonio will reportedly cost significantly less than the average four-year degree.

The UTI-San Antonio campus will be promoted at local and area high schools as an alternative to college or university.

“I just love that as society and also at the high school level, we’re much more willing and able to offer alternative pathways for what they choose to do, not what we choose for them to do. So, I’m really very proud to be part of that process and changing that conversation for young adults,” Lorenz said.

Officials are also seeing a rise in women joining skilled-trade jobs especially in the welding industry.

“We’ve done a really nice job recruiting women and more females into the trades. And so, I’m excited to see what that does. In the San Antonio market, we offer a program where we go into the high schools, and promote women in STEM to really recruit that, female population that maybe wouldn’t otherwise, think about trades as a career. So, we’re really excited to see how San Antonio responds to that,” she said.

UTI students are also encouraged to work part-time while completing their coursework in an effort to acclimate working on a day-to-day basis.

“We think that that’s a good way for them to earn their way and already develop their industry relationships. So, there’s a lot of different creative ways that we support our students through that journey,” Lorenz said.

Students will be able to apply to UTI – San Antonio in the fall of 2025.

“We train people to fix stuff. We play an important role in society by educating that skilled collar worker and bringing dignity to that job and making sure that we’re educating prospective students that there are great jobs out there for them and alternative pathways,” Lorenz said.

UTI – San Antonio also has a sister school, Concorde Career College that focuses on health education. Applications are available now.
