CUNEY, Texas — A young East Texas mother passed away Friday following a wreck in Cherokee County earlier this month, leaving behind her 1-year-old daughter.
Jazmin Macias, 24, of Little Elm, died in connection with injuries from a two-vehicle wreck on Dec. 8 near Cuney, according to information from family members.
The father of her child, Antonio Santana III, 23, of Little Elm, died when the crash happened, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. A GoFundMe that was set up to fundraise for Macias’ medical expenses states the child is still recovering.
DPS said the crash occurred around 4:10 p.m., on US Highway 175, about eight miles north of Jacksonville.
An investigation revealed a Chevrolet truck, driven by David Blakeney, 69, of Jacksonville, was traveling north on US 175. At the same time, a Honda Accord, driven by Santana, and a Toyota Corolla, driven by Kimberly Wilkins, 22, of Laredo, were driving south on US 175.
DPS said the Chevrolet veered into the south lane of US 175, striking the Honda and Toyota. Blakeney and Santana were pronounced dead at the scene.
Macias and her daughter were taken to hospitals for treatment at the time, DPS said.
Wilkins and passengers in her vehicle identified as Kenton Holma, 38; another 1-year-old child; and a 6-year-old child, all of Laredo, were also taken to a Tyler hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
