UTSA projects a $7 billion economic impact as a result of the merger.
SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas at San Antonio has officially integrated with UT Health San Antonio, a history-making merger that leaders say will boost the city’s already booming healthcare and biotech industry.
“It’s this momentous day in history where we are launching a brand-new university to do all of this amazing innovation [and] education and really focusing on making lives better here in our community, South Texas, the nation and the world,” Taylor Eighmy, UTSA President said.
With the merger, the new institution is now the third-largest research university in Texas. University officials project a $7 billion overall economic impact, including $486 million dedicated to research.
“San Antonio deserves an institution like this,” Eighmy said. “The way we intend to educate, to make lives better, to innovate will have deep impact to each and every person here in our community.”
University leaders say the combined strengths of UTSA and UT Health San Antonio will expand opportunities for students and enhance patient care, while accelerating discoveries from labs to the community.
“I think this institution is going to change remarkably over the next ten years,” Eighmy said. “If I were to go forward ten years and look backwards, what I think I’ll marvel at is the scale and impact that we’ve had in our community in Texas, the nation and the world.”
UTSA said they plan to have events for students and staff to celebrate the historic milestone. UTSA also said they will remain the roadrunners despite the merger.
