UTSA ends historic season 1 game away from College World Series

The Roadrunners led the country in comeback victories but weren’t able to continue the journey past Sunday.

LOS ANGELES — After a devastating loss in Game 1 of the Super Regional, UTSA looked to extend their historic season to a winner-take-all game and get one step closer to punching their ticket to Omaha.

On Saturday, the Roadrunners jumped out early but ended up falling to UCLA 5-2 after the Bruins put together a great hitting performance.

Game 2 didn’t quite get off to the start Game 1 did as we were scoreless until the fourth inning when UCLA’s Toussaint Bythewood ripped an RBI single into right field to bring in Payton Brennan for the first run of the game, 1-0 Bruins.

UCLA added to their lead in the top of the fifth after Roch Cholowsky hit a rocket to right-center field, bringing Phoenix Call in from third to make the score 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, UTSA centerfielder Mason Lytle saved several runs from coming around when he made a diving play while bases were loaded with two outs for UCLA.

The Bruins tagged on another run in the top of the eighth after a 108 mph line drive ricochet off UTSA pitcher Braylon Owens’ right arm, extending the score to 3-0.

Owens, who was spectacular during last weekend’s Regional in Austin, tried to stay in the game but couldn’t as the ball hit him square in the throwing arm.

A sac-fly added to the Bruins’ lead shortly after, making the score 4-0 before the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the last frame, Brennan got his third hit of the night with an RBI double in the gap to bring in two more insurance runs, 6-0 UCLA.

A chopper down the first base line was enough to bring the seventh run across for the Bruins before heading into the bottom of the ninth up 7-0.

UCLA recorded three-straight outs to end the game and UTSA’s historic season, which saw them go further than any other Roadrunners team had in the past.
