With College Football Playoff possibilities, Roadrunner Football is looking to open early regular season strong.
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Football posted an (8-4) regular season in 2023 with three of those losses coming in the month of September, and that’s prompted Head Coach Jeff Traylor to make a tough musical decision this summer.
“It makes me quit listening to ‘Earth Wind And Fire'”, he said.
So I guess in the words of ‘Say Do You Remember’ and ‘Dancing in September’ is not part of the pregame playlist this fall camp.
“I’ve said it one million times before,” Traylor said. “That was a tough September last year.”
I don’ think anybody is predicting (4-0) especially with one of those games before in Austin at DKR against the Texas Longhorns, but (3-1) is certainly out there and available.
“How you start anything can kind of project how the rest of it is going to go,” said Safety Elliott Davison. “We have to start out strong and come out on fire.”
It is arguably the toughest stretch of the regular season with games at Texas State, at Texas, at East Carolina and home with Houston Christian. I’d say hosting the Huskies inside the Alamodome is the only guaranteed ‘win’ at this point. The ‘Runners are going to have to work for it next month.
“That is something we have been heavily preaching right now,” said QB Owen McCown. “Just take it one day at a time. We say, ‘winning the day’ around here.”
There’s no doubt non-conference play is always of huge significance, but you can even add to that these days with the playoff field expanded to twelve. UTSA will be one of several times from the Group Of Five Conferences fighting for one of those spots.
“You can’t mess up,” said Traylor. “We’re all fighting for one spot.”
Davison told us his team takes pride in finishing games, but that several games last year was about the start, and that’s something they need to do much better.
“That’s how we’re going to win games,” he said.
The season starts on Aug 31 when UTSA welcomes Kennesaw State. They’ll need to get that one before that difficult September stretch takes center stage.
