SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Coalition of Veterans and Families is getting extra support from UTSA grad students to help others in need.
The students are pushing a fundraiser to support the coalition during the government shutdown.
The students are working to raise $2,500 with a GoFundMe to support the non-profit.
Richard Hunter is a marine veteran getting his MBA at UTSA and one of his class requirements is to support a local organization in the community.
His team chose to support the coalition, so far, they’ve raised $1,100.
“The government shutdown is a perfect example of how they were able to respond to the crisis by providing HEB gift cards to active duty families that don’t have necessarily the deep pockets that some other people might have,” said Hunter.
The coalition provides assistance with food, utilities, health care and work.
To get support, the organization is asking veterans to bring their DD 214 and ID.
Typically serving 350 veterans a year, the coalition is already serving 430.
“This is our responsibility as citizens of this country to help those that are in need. This is just my calling and it’s my honor to do this,” said San Antonio Coalition of Veterans and Families President Tony Fuentes.
Hunter says they plan to do an in-person fundraiser at a San Antonio store on Saturday.
San Antonio VFW is hosting Noche de Fuego, with food, music, drinks, and comedy Saturday night at the Espee.
Part of the proceeds will go to support the nonprofit.
The fundraiser goal for the GoFundMe is $2,500 dollars.
