UTSA will look to improve on its 1-4 mark in bowl game matchups.
SAN ANTONIO — Despite coming off their worst season in the Jeff Traylor era, the UTSA Roadrunners will keep their bowl streak alive and play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Monday, December 23.
The Roadrunners will play Coastal Carolina at Brooks Stadium. This will mark UTSA’s first meeting with Coastal Carolina, which also will enter the contest with a 6-6 record.
It’s the fifth straight year UTSA has received a bowl game invite. The team will look to improve on their 1-4 mark in those games, having secured their victory last year when they beat Marshall in the Frisco Bowl, capping their first season in the American Athletic Conference with a 9-4 record.
That momentum didn’t carry into the program’s 2024 campaign, at least not off the bat. In mid-October the team was 2-4 and coming off back-to-back road losses. Their offense started to gel from that point as the ‘Runners scored at least 40 points in four of their next six games, going 4-2 in that span.
They finished the regular season with a 6-6 mark, including a 4-4 conference mark in AAC play. The Roadrunners were a perfect 6-0 at home, where they outscored opponents 254-137, while going winless and being outscored 239-151 in six road matchups.
Sophomore quarterback Owen McCown, taking over the reins from Frank Harris, passed for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns while netting a 137.0 passer rating. Running backs Robert Henry and Brandon High Jr. both scored seven times this season. The Roadrunners defense gave up 31.3 points per game – ninth in the 14-team AAC – while scoring 32.3 points per game.
Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
