CONWAY, S.C. — Even though the matchup is listed as the home team, it was a road game for UTSA football in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl.
The game was played at Coastal Carolina’s home stadium in Conway, South Carolina, and the Chanticleers were their opponent.
But despite that, and with temps in the 40s, the UTSA offense found their first-half groove with three second-quarter touchdowns to lead 21-0 at the half. It started with a Brandon High touchdown run from inside the 10-yard line followed by a 35-yard scoring run from Owen McCown, capped with a 6-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Patrick Overmyer.
Coastal Carolina’s only redzone opportunity was inside the final two minutes of the half, which UTSA stopped on a fourth-down call.
The second half was much of the same.
UTSA added short field goals on its opening two drives of the second half, while Coastal Carolina started with two straight three-and-out drives. UTSA ended CCU’s third drive on Jakevian Rodgers’ first career interception to extend the program’s single-game streak with an interception and a sack to 23 games.
CCU’s first touchdown came on the first play of the fourth quarter when Bryson Graves caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Tad Hudson. But UTSA’s Chris Carpenter returned the ensuing kickoff for a 93-yard touchdown to make it 34-7.
The Roadrunners went on to score the most points in its bowl game history to secure their second-straight bowl game victory.
Owen McCown threw for 254 yards and a touchdown. UTSA rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns despite being without its top rusher, Robert Henry, who entered with a team-high 130 carries for 706 yards and seven touchdowns. McCown, High and Will Henderson III each had a rushing touchdown.
It was the largest margin of victory in the five-year history of the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
