Uvalde County Commissioners vote to release Robb Elementary shooting records.
UVALDE, Texas — Uvalde County Commissioners voted Monday to release records related to the Robb Elementary School shooting in 2022.
This comes after last week’s Texas appeals court order that Uvalde County and the school district must release their records. The ruling was part of a lawsuit involving KENS 5 and other news outlets seeking emails, texts and other communications connected to the killing of 19 students and two teachers inside the school’s classrooms.
In a short, closed session, the commissioners voted to release the records, Uvalde news outlets reported. This also follows a vote from last week from the Uvalde CISD Board of Trustees, which also decided to release records on the mass shooting.
Jesse Rizo, who lost his niece, 9-year-old Jackie Cazares, in the shooting, was at the Commissioners Court meeting and spoke on behalf of other victims’ family members.
“It was highly emotional. A lot of the family members couldn’t be there. They were at another facility where they were doing a dedication to their loved ones,” Rizo said.
Rizo is also a member of the Uvalde CISD Board of Trustees. He said he was relieved the commissioners followed suit with the school board.
“I would have liked to have seen a unanimous vote in favor, but I respect the process and ultimately what is important to us is they voted in favor of not furthering the appeal,” Rizo said. “It is going to be a difficult day when it does come out, but I think ultimately it is a way to provide some type of healing for the family, for the survivors and, of course, for the community.”
Rizo said he does not yet know what is included in those documents. A date to release the records has not been set.
The City of Uvalde last year released previously withheld documents, video and 911 calls related to the shooting.
This is a developing story and further details will be added as they are received.
