UTOPIA, Texas — For the second straight day, we’re seeing more previously unreleased records from the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School as part of a lawsuit calling for them to be made public.
Media organizations, including TEGNA Texas (WFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth, KHOU in Houston, KVUE in Austin, KENS in San Antonio, KCEN in Waco-Temple-Killeen, KYTX in Tyler-Longview, KBMT in Beaumont-Port Arthur, KIII in Corpus Christi, KWES in Midland-Odessa, KIDY in San Angelo, and KXVA in Abilene) and the Associated Press, sued the district and county in 2022 for the release of their records related to the mass shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers.
Documents released by the school district on Monday detailed the gunman’s downward spiral beginning in middle school, including his dropping out of school just months before the massacre.
A Texas appeals court in July upheld a lower court’s ruling that the records must be released. The batch released on Tuesday is the final set of records tied to the suit.
Right now, we’re going through all of the new records, which include bodycam video. We’ll share what we find throughout the day on this page.
What the records/videos released Tuesday show
According to the Associated Press, the bodycam released on Tuesday shows officers from several departments in the Robb Elementary hallway and standing outside. Officers were suggesting throwing gas in the window or looking for a key for the classroom. The AP also reports that it wasn’t clear if the suggestions were taken or who was in charge.
Within minutes, parents made their way to a fence near the school and yelled at officers to do something.
“Whose class is he in?” one parent can be heard yelling. Another yells: “Come on, man, my daughter is in there.” Another parent, not seen on the video, angrily says, “Either you go in or I’m going in, bro,” adding a few seconds later, “My kids are in there, bro … please.”
In one video, an officer involved in the initial response can be heard saying, “We can’t see him at all” before adding, “We were at the front and he started shooting.”
The officer wearing the body cam asks: “He’s in a classroom, right?” Another officer responds: “With kids.”
We’re continuing to follow this story and will post more findings as we get them.
