UVALDE, Texas — The Uvalde community is mourning the loss of former County Judge William Ross “Bill” Mitchell, a longtime public servant who spent decades in local government.
City leaders announced Mitchell’s passing, describing him as a leader devoted to serving the community. Mitchell first served as a Uvalde city councilmember before going on to serve nearly 40 years as Uvalde County judge.
Officials said his legacy is marked by dedication, resilience and a deep commitment to the people of Uvalde.
Mitchell died Friday following a yearslong battle with cancer, according to officials. He was 77.
Gov. Greg Abbott has authorized flags in the area to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
