Uvalde Police, DA won’t oppose venue change for former officer facing charges in 2022 school shooting

Officials in Uvalde will not oppose moving Adrian Gonzales’ trial, linked to the Robb Elementary shooting.

UVALDE, Texas — Some officials in Uvalde say they will not oppose a change of venue for a former school officer facing charges in the Robb Elementary School shooting in  2022.

Adrian Gonzales is indicted on 29 counts of child endangerment in connection to the deaths of 19 children and two teachers when a gunman entered a classoom and opened fire on May 24, 2022.

He is one of only two officers charged in connection with the failed law enforcement response to the shooting. Documents show the gunman was inside the classroom for 77 minutes before officers breached the door and took down the suspect. Former Uvalde CISD Chief Pete Arredondo was also indicted on charges.

According to Uvalde local reports, Gonzales’ attorney filed the motion for a change of venue August 11, which is the same day thousands of pages of records were released by Uvalde CISD. The school district had been ordered to release the documents after an ongoing lawsuit demanding transparency by various agencies.

The Uvalde Leader News reported that the motion to change the venue has the support of the Uvalde Police Department, which agreed in a statement that it would be difficult for Gonzales to receive a fair trial.

Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell also said her office is not against the change of venue request.

Gonzalez’s trial is still set for Oct. 20.
