‘Very mom-like’ | Texans owner Cal McNair describes Janice McNair’s reaction to being added to team’s Ring of Honor

The team announced co-founder Janice McNair will join her late husband Bob McNair, Andre Johnson, and JJ Watt with the honor.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans co-founder and senior chair Janice McNair will be the fourth member of the team’s Ring of Honor.

The team made the announcement on Saturday. She’ll be inducted during halftime of the Texans’ Week 9 game against Denver on Nov. 2 at NRG Stadium.

Janice McNair joins her late husband Bob McNair, Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Johnson and J.J. Watt as members of the Ring of Honor.

“My parents brought football back to Houston more than 20 years ago and ever since, my mom has given so much to our city and our organization,” Houston Texans Chair and CEO Cal McNair said in a news release. “There is no one more deserving of being the next member of this illustrious group than mom. She continues to be our team’s biggest fan, and I know how proud dad would be to see her name join his in the rafters of NRG Stadium. I can’t wait to celebrate her induction into the Ring of Honor this season.”

“I’m thrilled to join Bob, Andre and J.J. in the Ring of Honor,” Janice McNair said. “It means so much to me to be inducted alongside three of my favorite Texans. I have cherished every gameday since 2002 and I’m so proud of our team. It will be such a blessing to celebrate this special occasion with our amazing fans in November. Go Texans!”

The McNairs have donated more than $500,000 to charities focused on education and medical research through The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, Houston Texans Foundation, and Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation.  The Houston Texans Foundation launched in 2002 and has raised more than $50 million for community programs, youth development, and access to resources.

At a news conference Saturday, Cal McNair described his mother’s reaction to the honor.

“She said she didn’t deserve it, which is very mom like,” he said. “I think she’s really happy to be up there with dad and being recognized.”

Bob and Janice McNair moved to Houston in 1960. Janice McNair grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and graduated with an education degree and later an honorary doctorate from Columbia College.
