Volunteers served 222 hours supporting Christian Assistance Ministry, preparing food and organizing clothing donations ahead of a Saturday benefit car show.
SAN ANTONIO — Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1533 and their families recently joined a nationwide effort aimed at highlighting the continued service of America’s veterans.
On May 23, volunteers with VFW Post 1533 partnered with Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) to support individuals and families in need across the San Antonio area as part of the 5th Annual VFW Day of Service.
The effort brought together 26 volunteers from the post who contributed a total of 222 volunteer hours during the month of May.
As part of the project, volunteers served 104 hours on-site at CAM, preparing 763 sandwiches for community members and assembling 600 snack bags. Scout Troop 307 also supported the effort by collecting 400 pounds of clothing for donation.
Volunteers also sorted 550 pounds of clothing at CAM, spent eight hours collecting donated clothing, and dedicated 110 hours to storing and organizing clothing donations ahead of the event.
“Our veterans remain committed to serving our community,” said Suzzie Thomas of VFW Post 1533. “This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when veterans and community partners work together to support neighbors facing challenges.”
VFW Post 1533 was established on Nov. 12, 1935, and remains active in the local community, with a focus on supporting local schools. The post has donated more than $98,000 in scholarships.
The community will have another chance to support the post this weekend during the Patriot Heights 1st Annual Car Show.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Patriot Heights Assisted Living, located at 5000 Fawn Meadow in San Antonio.
Funds raised from the car show will equally benefit VFW Post 1533 and the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature vehicles, vendors, live music, food trucks, trophies and prizes.
VFW Post 1533 will also hold a membership drive during the event, giving eligible veterans a chance to learn more about the benefits of joining the VFW, including advocacy efforts related to veteran health care and earned benefits.
