SAN ANTONIO — The call is out for volunteers to help feed thousands of San Antonians this Thanksgiving.
Online registration for the 46th annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner is now open.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones helped kick off this year’s sign-up campaign.
“This is such an important event in our community,” Mayor Jones said. “I had to think about my own Thanksgiving that I spent in high school, and I mean did you go to high school in San Antonio if you didn’t spend at least one volunteering at the Jimenez dinner in some form or fashion? […] When you think about how somebody treats the most vulnerable, they are in fact showing their character.”
The dinner has been a San Antonio tradition since 1979 and will take place Thanksgiving Day at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Organizers expect a record number of guests this year and say they’ll need more than 4,000 volunteers to make it happen.
“As we plan for this, we are getting ready to prepare 4,000 additional meals to ensure that no one who walks through the door is left behind,” Patricia Jimenez, president and CEO of the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner, said.
In addition, the Kym Rapier Foundation has donated $100,000 for the event.
Volunteers can register here, until all the volunteer opportunities are filled.
