SAN ANTONIO — Volunteers are set to begin picking up trash along waterways across San Antonio starting at 9 a.m. Saturday as part of the annual Basura Bash cleanup effort.
Cleanup activities will take place at 24 sites across the city, including Brackenridge Park, Woodlawn Lake Park, Tobin Trailhead and Olmos Basin Park.
Organizers say more than 100,000 pounds of trash were collected during last year’s event.
“If we don’t actively try to mitigate this, not only during Basura Bash but year round at River Aid San Antonio’s cleanups, almost weekly, we’re going to have some waterways that are very uninviting and frankly, degrading by the day,” said Charles Blank, executive director of River Aid San Antonio.
Over the past 30 years, Basura Bash volunteers have collected 1.94 million pounds of trash. Organizers expect that total to surpass 2 million pounds following Saturday’s cleanup.
