The voter turnout this year is 6% shy of the record-breaking 65% turnout Bexar County had in 2020.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — The voter turnout results are in for Bexar County and more than half of registered voters showed up to cast their ballots in this election.
A little more than 150,000 people in the county voted on Election Day. The total including early voting, Election Day and mail-in ballots turned out to be nearly 760,000. That means voter turnout will top 59% for the 2024 general election.
According the Bexar County Elections website, the breakdown is as follows:
- Election Day: 150,392
- Absentee ballots: 32,366
- Early voting: 576,639
There were 1,295,920 registered voters going into the election period. The voter turnout this year is 6% shy of the record-breaking 65% turnout Bexar County had in 2020. There was a 57.7% total turnout rate for the presidential election in 2016.
Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen said she was pleased with the participation despite the dip in turnout. She said there were no major technical issues or incidents involving voters.
“Please, just say thank you to the officials. They did a fantastic job. And it was a difficult job,” Callanen said. “We had some real enthusiastic poll watchers, we had some anxious voters that were concerned with people come up to their cars as they were doing curbside voting.”
This was also the last presidential election for Callanen, who is stepping down from her role after this year. She has served for 30 years in the Bexar County Elections Department, 19 of which as the administrator. She says she will retire in January. A national search is being conducted to find her replacement.
