SAN ANTONIO — Likely voters in San Antonio are divided on a new plan to bring a Spurs arena to the downtown area, a new local poll shows.
The City of San Antonio and Bexar County plan to redevelop part of Hemisfair and an area just east of Interstate 37 into a sports and entertainment district. The plan is being called “Project Marvel.” It includes construction of a new arena for the San Antonio Spurs and a land bridge over Interstate 37. The ambitious plan also includes expansions of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the Alamodome.
Project Marvel-Spurs arena
UTSA’s Center for Public Opinion Research conducted a poll on how San Antonians feel about the long-reaching plan. The poll of likely voters showed that 41% said they thought the city and county should carry on with the project, while 36% said they should not. The poll also found 20% of people were not sure and 3% had no opinion.

The poll also asked voters how they felt about funding for Project Marvel coming from the county’s venue tax, which is a tax on rental cars and hotel rooms. Bexar County voters are likely to vote on this, possibly as soon as November 2025. Voters are also divided on that issue as well, with 42% of people said they would vote in favor of this, while 41% said they would not. 15% were not sure and 2% said they had no opinion.
Missions baseball downtown
Voters also gave their thoughts on another plan to bring the San Antonio Missions baseball team to the downtown area. The plan would build a new 7,500-8,000 seat stadium just north of downtown to be funded by nearby land development. LIke Project Marvel, voters were divided with 41% being in favor of the new ballpark and 35% being opposed.

Green Line Rapid bus transit
The poll also asked likely voters to weigh in on a plan to bring the VIA Green Line rapid bus transit line to San Antonio. The service would run noth to south and connect the airport with the Mission reach. Buses would have dedicated lanes and have the ability to bypass road traffic, making it a faster service than existing bus routes. The plan drew a bit more support than Project Marvel and the Mission plan, with 50% of people in favor of the plan and only 22% of people opposed.
