Wagner, Pieper, Southwest and Southwest Legacy move up to Class 6A in UIL realignment

The biannual reclassification matches high schools in classes that have similar enrollment size for competitive balance.

SAN ANTONIO — Several San Antonio-area high schools are on the move as the University Interscholastic League (UIL) released its biannual reclassification of athletic programs Monday morning.

Wagner and Pieper high schools moved up from 5A to 6A to join District 27 alongside Steele, Judson and other longtime members of the northeast-side district.

Meanwhile, Southwest and Southwest Legacy both moved up to 6A and will be part of District 30, which includes four Laredo-area high schools, plus Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

Going the other direction is Medina Valley, which drops from 6A to 5A as its student population decreases with the opening of Medina Valley Creek View, the district’s second high school.

The classifications are based on enrollment figures for each high school. Schools with 2,215 or more students qualify for Class 6A.

Additional shuffling of districts within the classifications also happened to balance the new lineup of schools. Buda Johnson, which had been playing the northeast-side schools for the past two years, moves back to Class 6A District 26 and will face more Austin-area schools.

New Braunfels Long Creek joins New Braunfels in Class 5A Division 2 District 13, along with Alamo Heights, Boerne, San Antonio Veterans Memorial, Liberty Hill and Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch.

Smithson Valley moves to Class 5A Division 1 District 13 with Boerne Champion, Seguin and several Austin-area schools.
