‘Want them to feel connected’ | SA special education teacher serves student’s life skills by allowing them to deliver coffee to staff

SAN ANTONIO — Brackenridge High School is serving up life skills. It is part of a San Antonio ISD program that is more than just about delivering cafecito.

In fact, things are always brewing inside Carol Medina’s special education class. Her class has a coffee cart decked in out bright colors, it is called ‘Buenos Días Aguilas Café.’

Every Wednesday and Friday at least three students go around the school and make their coffee deliveries to faculty and staff. One of her students was behind the idea of the name.

“I am from Mexico,” Medina said. “This is who I am. And a lot of our students have Hispanic heritage. I wanted them to feel connected.”

On the delivery days, the students have it down to a system and everyone has their role.

KENS 5 followed three students, including Savanah, Jhoan and Joseph.

Savanah had a map and the orders in her hand, she is responsible for knocking on the doors and doing the greeting. Joseph handed over the cup of Joe, which is a specialized mixture of coffee grains roasted in Nuevo Leon. Meanwhile, Johan will collect the money.

“This is all about empowering them to become the best versions of themselves,” Medina said.

She said it is about opening their eyes to the possibility, they can.

One student Abraham Villa said it is the best.

“I try my best,” he said. “I love Ms. Medina. I like to do this.”

It is a program teaching the students important life skills that can help them transition after high school

“We don’t focus on the disabilities,” she said. “We focus on the abilities.”

The coffee cart program is at all district high schools. As for Brackenridge, Medina said she has seen a lot of progress in the students. Since they started in October, she said they have had 120 orders.
