Multiple warming centers open this weekend to provide residents with shelter, heat, power access, and basic supplies as freezing temperatures move into our area.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — SAN ANTONIO – As freezing temperatures settle across South Texas, Bexar County officials are urging residents to prepare for dangerous cold conditions and take advantage of local warming centers opening this weekend.

Staying Warm and Safe

Along with warming centers, officials are reminding residents to follow basic heater and cold-weather safety guidelines to prevent injuries, illness, and home damage during the cold snap.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Wear loose layers of clothing to help trap body heat.
  • Use generators, grills, and pressure washers outdoors only to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Place towels or blankets near doors and windows to stop warm air from escaping.
  • Close blinds and curtains and make sure all windows are tightly shut.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can increase heat loss.
  • Continue eating regular meals, as the body needs energy to stay warm.
  • Check on friends, family members, and neighbors, especially the elderly and those living alone.
  • Remember that even without power, your home may still be the safest place to shelter.
  • Avoid driving if possible and use caution when walking on icy sidewalks or roads.
  • Stay tuned to trusted local sources for weather updates and emergency information.

County leaders say taking precautions now can help prevent emergencies later as temperatures continue to drop and dangerous wind chills move into the region.
