The idea came from a Kerrville family who wanted to find a way to give back. Quickly, the word spread and dozens are helping out.
KERRVILLE, Texas — A group of Hill Country volunteers is coming together to wash clothes for first responders and families impacted by the deadly flood.
The group is called Washed with Love, started by Laura and Scott Williams. Scott said he inspired his wife after sharing what he experienced while deployed in Iraq.
“I’m retired military, so I understand the value of clean clothes. I went days, weeks—even months—without them, so it’s important to us,” Williams said.
Laura launched the Washed with Love Facebook page on Sunday, and within days, word spread quickly. Nearly 50 volunteers are now working around the clock to wash clothes for free. The group has also received countless donations, including socks and underwear.
“We’ve got people who’ve been here since last Saturday, and today was the first time they’ve had a chance to do their laundry,” Williams said. “We’ve got firefighters who show up wearing only the clothes on their backs. So it’s very important to us that they have clean clothes.”
Amanda Lemons, from Helotes, said her son was attending a camp along the river on the Fourth of July. Fortunately, the entire camp was able to evacuate safely, and her son was back home that same night. She said that since then, she’s felt compelled to give back.
“You can see things on the news and look at pictures, but you don’t truly understand how bad it is or how deeply the community is affected,” Lemons said. “But what you also don’t always see is the overwhelming amount of help being given.”
