BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — On Monday, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) released body camera footage of a December shooting that authorities say wounded two deputies and left a suspect dead after a domestic disturbance call on the north side.
According to BCSO, the shooting happened just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, in the 700 block of Tecumseh Drive, near East Borgfeld Road. The narrated footage released Monday provided new insights into how the encounter unfolded.
The eight-minute video provided a transcript and audio recording of the 911 call that dispatch received that morning. A woman can be heard speaking in Spanish, stating that her ex-boyfriend – later identified as 38-year-old Jose Arlen Fernandez-Solano – had entered her home “without permission” while armed with a rifle and handgun, according to BCSO personnel narrating the video.
The deputy said the suspect ended up barricaded inside a bedroom of the home. Meanwhile, the caller was able to get her children out of the house and call 911 from up the street after the suspect entered their residence. The woman also told the dispatcher that Fernandez-Solano had threatened to kill her and her family.
The newly released body camera footage shows Deputy Nicholas Zinni and Deputy Nathan Sigala arriving at the residence and attempting to find the suspect. After a brief verbal encounter, Fernandez-Solano retreats into the home and a struggle ensues with the deputies. After about 10 seconds, multiple noises that sound like gunshots can be heard, and a deputy is heard yelling, “I’m hit, I’m hit!”
Zinni’s body camera footage shows him pulling out a gun and returning fire at Fernandez-Solano, who is lying on the ground.
Authorities said Sigala was struck in the left hand and Zinni in the pelvic area.
According to BCSO, after the shooting the deputies self-administered medical aid for their gunshot wounds until EMS arrived. Fernandez-Solano was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured deputies were later taken to a local hospital for their injuries.
Officials said investigators recovered a stolen .40-caliber handgun that was in the suspect’s possession.
Salazar said previously that Fernandez-Solano was a Costa Rican national with an extensive criminal history. Fernandez-Solano had been deported at least once and had multiple prior arrests for domestic violence-related offenses, including assault causing bodily injury to a family member and injury to a child, records show.
Investigators say there had been at least 22 calls for service tied to the same residence since early 2024, and the suspect had two active felony warrants connected to a domestic violence case from October.
Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave, per BCSO policy, and are expected to return to limited duty once cleared medically and psychologically. The incident remains under investigation.
