Waymo to expand San Antonio services to SAT

The autonomous ride-hailing service is now available for travelers flying in or out of San Antonio International Airport, marking a first for the facility.

SAN ANTONIO — The self-driving car company Waymo has expanded its Alamo City to include rides to and from San Antonio International Airport, starting Tuesday.

The company, which officially launched local rides in February, said this marks the first time anywhere in Texas that a “fully autonomous ride-hailing service” is offering airport transportation. Drop-offs will take place at the terminals curbside, with pickups available from the rideshare area.

Dozens of Waymo vehicles – distinct for the cameras that sit on top of the self-driving cars – have been operating across about 60 square miles of San Antonio, the company said.

“Providing a safe and reliable ride to and from the airport is one of the most requested uses for Waymo riders, and we’re proud to bring that capability to San Antonians,” said Arica Gately, head of airport partnerships and business development for Waymo. “Waymo works closely with communities to meet the diverse needs of residents and expanding access to San Antonio International Airport will serve as a key connection to the region’s transportation network.”

The self-driving cars have been at the center of some investigations, including a National Transportation Safety Board probe into instances involving Waymo vehicles passing Austin school buses while kids were getting on or off. And Waymo representatives faulted human error after one of its cars drove through an active fire scene in San Antonio earlier this month.

Waymo, citing an internal study, said its drivers have been involved in 13 times fewer crashes resulting in serious injuries and five times fewer crashes that saw air bags deployed.

Airport officials said Waymo’s arrival represents the facility’s commitment “to leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovation” as it continues its own $2.5 billion expansion

“We are building the airport of the future, making this a significant milestone for Waymo, our city and travelers”, said Jesus Saenz, airports director for the City of San Antonio.
