SAN ANTONIO — Autonomous driving company Waymo says its cars will soon be fully operating on San Antonio roads.
Fully autonomous operations started Tuesday in Miami and will begin in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando over the coming weeks.
The company says it will begin by offering employees fully autonomous trips before opening the service to the public next year. The car operates off a “Waymo Driver” service that adapts to road conditions.
The company says that in cities where the vehicles are already operating, road safety has improved. The company claims there are fewer serious injury collisions involving Waymo cars compared to human drivers.
Advocates against drunk driving say it could be a step to elimate drunk drivers on the roads,
“U.S. MADD believes safely advancing progress toward fully autonomous vehicles will help achieve our mission of eliminating drunk and drugged driving. With each advancement in auto technology, more lives will be spared the horrible physical and emotional impact caused by impaired driving,” Michael Daley, MADD Texas Regional Executive Director, said.
