‘We are heartbroken and devastated,’ says grandmother of Florida child killed in motorcycle crash

“Calvin was funny and loving. We really can’t even talk about it,” said the boy’s grandmother.

ST. PETERS, Mo. — His grandmother says 4-year-old Calvin Spurlock was funny, outgoing and loved Spider-Man.

Janet Bond said her first grandchild was “the light of their lives.”

A light now tragically gone.

“I have two kids and I just can’t imagine being in their position, so sad,” said neighbor Alex Shaw.

St. Peters police say around five Sunday evening, they received multiple 911 calls about a motorcycle accident near Fort Zumwalt South High School by Mexico Road and Beallau Creek.

Investigators said a child and a man were on a motorcycle when it left westbound Mexico Road, hit a utility police and tossed them off the bike.

Janet Bond said her grandson, Calvin, died at a hospital.

Police said the motorcyclist also suffered “critical, but non-life-threatening injuries.”

Calvin’s grandmother identified the driver as his mother’s boyfriend.

“Unbelievable, so sad,” said another neighbor.

The sudden loss of the little boy has saddened parents who live near the crash site.

“I have a 4-year-old so my heart goes out to them,” added the concerned neighbor.

“It’s really busy out here at this intersection everyday. It’s really hectic,” said Shaw.

Police said no other vehicles were involved in the collision. They also said the child and man both wore helmets at the time.

Meanwhile, understandably, Calvin Spurlock’s grief-stricken grandmother couldn’t talk to 5 On Your Side on camera.

Bond told 5 On Your Side’s Robert Townsend by phone her grandson lived in St. Peters with his mom and her boyfriend.

Bond said, “We are heartbroken and devastated. Our world is shattered.”

Calvin Spurlock would’ve celebrated his fifth birthday in August.

“My heart breaks for them and my prayers and thoughts are going toward them,” added Shaw.

The St. Peters Police Department’s Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.

It could take several weeks before they determine more details, including whether speed or other factors contributed to the crash.
