‘We can’t give up on him’: 15-year-old accused in deadly shooting of Bexar Co. teen has a dozen prior juvenile court appearances, to remain detained

A 15-year-old faces charges after another 15-year-old was fatally shot on Friday in northeast Bexar County.

SAN ANTONIO — A 15-year-old faces a tampering with evidence charge after a shooting left another teen dead on the northeast side Friday morning, according to the Bexar County officials, but investigators are still looking into his role in the murder.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said deputies received a call just before 11 a.m. about an injured boy who was found in the street at Woodlake Parkway and Lakeview Drive. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Salazar said the teenage victim was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries. He has not been identified at this time. Both the victim and detained teen were previously identified by the sheriff as being 14 years old.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and is believed to be the murder weapon, according to BCSO.

Teen makes court appearance

The detained 15-year-old is no stranger to court proceedings. According to probation officers, he’s had 12 prior appearance in juvenile court.

About a dozen family members showed up Monday to support the teen, who has been detained since his Friday arrest. Bexar County investigators say he had – and tried to hide – the weapon that was used to kill the victim that day off Woodlake Parkway.

The name of the young victim hasn’t been released by the medical examiner.

A probation officer told 386th Juvenile District Court Judge Jackie Valdes that on previous charges the teen has failed drug tests and failed to pay restitution. As a result, they resumed supervision in February.

The prosecutor, Jennifer Medino, asked for the teen to remain locked up. Meanwhile, defense lawyer Brandon Jackson asked for the boy’s release so long as he adhere to conditions, and his parents asked for leniency.

“Let his truth be told by the evidence and by his truth of what he speaks,” said the boy’s mother, speaking through tears. “I know my son is an amazing young king.”

His father also addressed the judge, calling his son “smart and intelligent” and adding he “comes from a good home.”

“We need to support him and don’t let him fall by the wayside,” the man said. “We can’t give up on him. He has a lot to live for.”

Choosing caution, Valdes ordered the teen to remain detained. He’ll be back for another scheduled hearing the morning of Oct. 27.

The teen’s family told KENS 5 they wanted to send condolences to the victim’s family.
