‘We didn’t know the man was dead!’ | Witness gives account of SA murder scene after unknowingly walking past dead body

Police are investigating after a young man was found dead from multiple gunshots at Pecan Valley Golf Club Apartments as residents report ongoing safety concerns.

SAN ANTONIO — A young man was found dead in the parking lot of the Pecan Valley Golf Club Apartments on Wednesday night and police are looking for clues about who shot him multiple times.

People who live in the complex on Pecan Valley Drive near Southcross Blvd in southeast San Antonio said trouble is common in the area, as there are no security gates to keep people out who don’t live there.

Joseph, who said he saw the young man on the ground when he walked to a nearby convenience store, said trespassers frequently come to the complex to use drugs, so he wasn’t alarmed when he saw the young man.

“I passed right by the man and we didn’t know the man was dead,” Joseph said. “You know they’d be high and on drugs and stuff and they’ll sit on these steps, lay on these steps, and be knocked out. We didn’t think nothing of it.”

Joseph said when he returned from the store, there were numerous police officers looking for the victim because several people had called to report hearing shots fired.

Joseph said residents directed officers to the body.

“When police came they didn’t even know what address to go to. They asked us where Building 25 was and we directed them to Apartment 25 near where it was at,” he said.

Though numerous people heard shots, police said they are still looking for witnesses who may have seen what happened.

Finding people willing to talk may be difficult, Joseph said, because there are so many people in the area who don’t belong.

“We have random people come on this property and we don’t know half of these people and they come on this compound and they hang around here and that’s the reason why we have security to try to get them off the property,” Joseph said.

A review of police calls for service over the last six months reveals that officers have been called at least 20 times to handle disturbances, including a shooting reported just 12 days ago.

There are other calls for burglaries, thefts, assaults and threats.

Joseph said hard-working people who pay rent deserve to live in peace.

“We deserve to be able to live just like everybody else, live in a in a community where we can be able to enjoy ourselves and be able to come outside and not have to worry about conflicts, shot dead or getting killed,” Joseph said. “I mean just getting in any kind of conflict with people that don’t live here, period. Half of the problem that goes on here is dealing with people that don’t live here.”

So far, police have only identified the victim as a young Black male. The medical examiner has not released his name yet.

San Antonio Police hope anyone who has information that might help lead to an arrest will reach out directly to the Homicide division at 210-207-7635.
