‘We grieve this tremendous loss’ | Longtime Houston firefighter dies following on-duty medical emergency

Houston firefighter Stephen Scott died from complications after a medical emergency while transporting a patient.

HOUSTON — A Houston firefighter who suffered a medical emergency while transporting a patient has died, according to the Houston Fire Department.

On Sunday, Stephen Scott of Station 102 was in the process of transporting a patient to HCA Kingwood when he began experiencing a medical issue. He was admitted to the same hospital.

Doctors later determined Scott needed to be transferred by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann in the Texas Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

The Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association said Scott died Wednesday from “resulting complications.”

“Brother Scott dedicated nearly three decades to protecting the people of Houston,” said Patrick M “Marty” Lancton, HPFFA President. “We grieve this tremendous loss and stand with his family and fellow firefighters during this difficult time.”

According to HFD, Scott joined the department in 1997 and had been serving at Station 102 in Kingwood since 2008. Before that, he spent many years at Station 9 on Hogan Street. In addition to his field work, he also managed HFD’s Base Station services operated by SETRAC, which coordinates ambulance traffic across the region to make sure patients reach hospitals with the proper resources available.

Scott is survived by his wife and three adult children.

The department said its Firefighter Support Network, along with the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 341, is working with Scott’s family and Station 102 to ensure they have support during this time. HFD is also offering critical incident stress resources for members impacted by the loss.

In Scott’s honor, HFD members will wear Class B uniforms with shrouded badges until he is laid to rest. Houston Mayor John Whitmire has also ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff.

Funeral service details have not yet been announced.
