The Rock Church in San Antonio is facilitating free grief counseling for families affected by recent flash floods.
SAN ANTONIO — Just feet away from where floodwaters swept away vehicles and claimed lives last week, a San Antonio church is stepping up to help grieving families—not just with prayers, but with action.
The Rock Church San Antonio, located at the corner of Vicar and Perrin Beitel, sits adjacent to Beitel Creek. Now, what was once just a neighboring waterway is part of the church’s story.
“We are on that street every day,” said Pastor Kevin Duhart. “That’s literally adjacent to our property.”
After seeing the devastation firsthand, Duhart and his team felt compelled to respond. With the help of leaders from Family Life Church, they’re now facilitating free grief counseling to any families impacted by the flooding.
“We had individuals out there who were weeping because they couldn’t find their loved ones,” Duhart said. “I felt… we had to do something to be a blessing.”
Church members, wearing “The Rock” shirts, joined mourners at a vigil Wednesday and are continuing to support victims and their families. The effort was inspired by a simple idea: with everything these families are facing, why should they also have to pay for someone to talk to?
“A survivor shared with me that his vehicle…struck where the bridge had collapsed,” Duhart recalled from the vigil. “When he was flung from his truck and landed, he looked up and actually saw our church. He knew exactly who we were…I said, ‘I’m the pastor of The Rock’. He said, ‘Well, I landed on a rock.'”

The Rock Church is now connecting grieving families with a variety of licensed counselors. All services are being offered at no cost, as long as families mention Pastor Kevin Duhart.
“Because it happened on our street, I feel like it was part of our responsibility to at least try and do something,” he said.
On Thursday night, another symbol emerged—a cross formed from the rocks in the creek. A quiet reminder, Duhart said, that even amid chaos, faith can endure.
“As catastrophic as it was, people are still trying to find some way of having hope,” he said.
