‘We just have a good time out here’ | Converse family’s free Christmas light show spreading holiday cheer since 2019

This year the display features nearly 40,000 lights, all synchronized to music that audience members can vote on.

SAN ANTONIO — A Converse family is lighting up their neighborhood with a Christmas display that’s become a full-on holiday destination.

Atticus McCoy and Ashley Dixon run what they call one of the largest private home light shows in the city at 10523 Coyote Hill. The Converse Light Show all started in 2019 with a single “mega tree.” Then in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic and with the help from stimulus checks – the family added more than 10,000 lights. McCoy said they knew that people were social distancing, but figured they could enjoy the outdoor show with their families. Every year since then, the display has only grown.

The show runs Sunday through Thursday from 6–9:30 p.m., and 6–10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This year, it features nearly 40,000 lights, all synchronized to Christmas music played on 106.1 FM. Visitors can even pick the next song using Remote Falcon, which asks for your location to keep voting local. The song with the most votes is then queued up. McCoy joked that a person could play “Baby Shark” on repeat as long as it got the most votes.

“People can stay here as long as they want to enjoy the lights and all of the activities that we have,” McCoy said.

There are also interactive photo spots like the “Angel Wings,” a selfie station, plus chalk hula hoops and other family-friendly activities. McCoy said on the weekends they also offer s’mores and competitions with winning prizes. Another benefit is the location, which allows people to take their time to enjoy the light show without the hustle and bustle of traffic.

“We just have a good time out here,” McCoy said.

And despite its size, the entire display runs at just 25% brightness and on a single electrical circuit. The total cost for the season? About $30 in electricity.

“Where else can you enjoy a light show like this without having to spend money, “ McCoy said while laughing.

McCoy said this could be the final year of the Converse Light Show and encouraged the community to come out and enjoy the holiday fun while they still can.
