‘We need help’: San Antonio Threads seeks support to stay open after losing major funding

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Threads is in dire need of help. CEO & Founder Cathy Hamilton said the non-profit is on the brink of closing after losing major funding.

Hamilton told KENS 5 she even gave up her recent paycheck to pay her employees.

“This battle seems like a huge mountain,” said Hamilton. “I don’t know if I can do it. I haven’t given up. But man, we need help. We need help.”

The organization gives new clothing and hygiene products to teenagers in foster care or youth who are at risk. Hamilton said they even help families in general.

“At this point, I am not sure what else to do,” she said. “It is terrifying right now because we expect to serve 2,000 kids for back to school. We are already at 4,000 on the year, 4,000 kids.”

Hamilton is struggling to keep the doors open. She said she recently found out she will no longer to continue to receive funding from a major donor this year. This is funding the non-profit has relied on for the last several years. Hamilton said what’s at stake is paying operating costs.

“I went without a salary the last two weeks so I can pay my employees,” she said. “I just told all my employees I can only pay them for two more weeks.”

Hamilton said she is desperate. She even put out a call for help on social media and is writing letters to anyone who may be able to help.

“The deficit is $200,000. That would keep us going for the rest of the year,” Hamilton said.

For the time being, she says she is hoping for a miracle to keep on serving those who need it most.

“If we are not here, I don’t know what will happen,” she said.
