The alleged message came from a group chat on X called “Spurs Familia” where several people made comments regarding Project Marvel.
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man is in custody after allegedly threatening to kill Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones in a social media conversation about Project Marvel.
According to an arrest affidavit, the investigation began Tuesday when someone contacted the Southwest Texas Fusion Center about a social media post on X (the center, based in San Antonio, investigates potential terrorist and criminal activity). The person reported a post by an X account with over 30,000 followers sharing a screenshot from a group chat named “Spurs Familia” with the caption: “People are threatening to kill San Antonio Mayor … over this. Everyone needs to take a strategic pause.”
Records state several people in the “Spurs Familia” chat were discussing Project Marvel, the city’s proposal for a downtown sports and entertainment district featuring plans for a new Spurs arena. The first visible comment in the screenshot lamented that the team was “gonna end up moving to Las Vegas.”
According to the affidavit, a user later identified as Marcos Rene Olvera then commented that “we need to kill the mayor.”
“Subsequent responses in the thread admonished the defendant, advising him ‘not to say that,'” the affidavit states.
Authorities were able to identify Olvera as the man behind the account after contacting X and his relative, records state. He was arrested Tuesday and faces a charge of obstruction/retaliation after he “intentionally/ knowingly threatened to ‘Kill the Mayor,’ whom is an elected official, in retaliation for her decision in advocating a pause on ‘Project Marvel.‘”
Court records indicate Olvera’s bond was set at $125,000 and that he was released Wednesday after posting it. He’s due back in court Nov. 10.
