BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — IMPACT DAYS: Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1
Reason: Very cold temperatures and frigid wind chills
The breakdown
After a few days of warmer conditions and sunshine in the San Antonio region, a cold front arriving Friday night will bring freezing conditions back to much of South-Central Texas for the second weekend in a row. Some Hill Country communities will wake up to morning lows in the mid-20s on Saturday.
The good news: There shouldn’t be precipitation during this winter event, which means no hazardous driving conditions like we experienced last weekend.
Here’s how cold it’s expected to be Saturday morning in local communities:
- Fredericksburg: 24 degrees
- Rocksprings: 25
- Kerrville: 27
- New Braunfels: 30
- Uvalde: 30
- Gonzales: 30
- Eagle Pass: 34
- San Antonio: 34
- Del Rio: 35
Most area communities will see afternoon highs topping out in the mid-to-high-40s. In San Antonio, the mercury is expected to rise no higher than 47 degrees.
Sunday morning will bring even colder conditions, with the mercury at 25 degrees in San Antonio; 20 in Fredericksburg; 21 in Kerrville; and 22 in Uvalde and Gonzales.
But conditions will start warming up Sunday afternoon, with San Antonio returning to the 50s, ahead of increasingly warmer conditions heading into next week.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has already issued a Cold Weather Advisory expected to be in effect from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday for Kerr, Kendall, Comal, Guadalupe, Gonzales and Lavaca counties. Wind chill temperatures could be as low as 13 degrees in some impacted areas, according to the NWS, which also warns of the potential for hypothermia if exposed to the cold for too long.”
Looking ahead
The next chain of rain doesn’t arrive until Tuesday; by that point, we’ll have warmed into much warmer conditions for the first full week of February. The following week is teasing even more spring-like conditions, with the possibility of reaching 70 degrees some afternoon.
