Wemby for Rookie of the Year? ‘Sho nuff,’ says Spike Lee.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker is clearly impressed by the San Antonio rookie’s sterling play… and his artistic flair.

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama has landed a most unexpected endorsement as he continues carving out his case for Rookie of the Year—and it comes from one of the biggest and most famous of New York Knicks fans.

Spike Lee, the Oscar-winning “Do The Right Thing” director who’s often found courtside at Knicks game, took to Instagram to show off a signed City Edition Spurs jersey gifted to him by San Antonio’s star rookie. And Wemby showed off some artistic flair, drawing a miniature likeness of Lee in his trademark thick-frame glasses.

Despite the Spurs owning one of the league’s worst records, the path to Wembanyama becoming Rookie of the Year – potentially by unanimous vote – is clear.

Entering Thursday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 20-year-old center was leading all NBA first-years in points per game (20.6), blocks per game (3.3) and rebounds per game (10.2). In January he was named Rookie of the Month; over the weekend he became the first player since 2019 to record a dominant 5×5 stat line; and the rookie has carved out a reputation for his maturity to go with his dazzling play.

Lee has noticed, and made it clear in his social media post.

“If I Had A Vote For Da NBA Rookie Of The Year It Would Go To VICTOR WEMBANYAMA of Da San Antonio Spurs,” he wrote in his typically jubilant style. “My Brother Gifted Me This Signed Game Worn Jersey. Ya-DIG? SHO-NUFF.”

Lee’s followers were quick to point out Wemby’s simple but effective artistic flourish, and some of them even made bold suggestions to bring the Frenchman to the East Coast, with one user writing: “Spike what would you do to get that man in a knicks jersey?”
