SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama has racked up broken records, highlight-reel blocks and awe-inspiring plays through the San Antonio Spurs’ first three games of the season – all wins – and now has an NBA accolade to show for it.
The association on Monday announced that San Antonio’s star center was named Western Conference Player of the Week after an initial slate of matchups that saw him become the first player in NBA history to record at least 100 points, 40 rebounds and 15 blocks through any team’s first three games.
There are still 79 games to go in San Antonio’s season, but the weekly honor bodes well for those front office executives who predicted before the season that Wemby might nab some MVP votes this year. Considering that the Spurs and defending champion Thunder are the only 3-0 teams entering Monday’s NBA action, they might have been on to something.
Wembanyama has helped the Spurs to a 3-0 record for the first time since 2019. In those three games, he’s averaging 33.3 points per game (seventh in the NBA), 13.3 rebounds (fourth), 6 blocks (first), 2.3 assists, and 1.67 steals in 33.3 minutes while shooting 56.9% from the field.
The 21-year-old Spurs center is now a two-time Western Conference Player of the Week winner, having won it the first time in December 2024.
Wembanyama posted a Spurs franchise record for most points in a season opener with his 40-piece against the Mavericks; he also grabbed 15 boards and shot 71.4% in that 125-92 rout over Dallas on Oct. 22. He became just the sixth player in NBA history to record such a stat line in any regular season game.
As for the encore performances:
- 29 points, 11 rebounds, 9 blocks while shooting 56.5% from the field against the Pelicans
- 31 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, 4 assists, 3 steals while hitting 3 of 6 from downtown against the Nets (third player in NBA history to reach those numbers in a game)
Just how far can Wemby carry the Spurs this season? The topic was discussed on Locked On Spurs; check out the conversation with Host Jeff Garcia below.
The Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA MVP winner, nabbed Player of the Week honors for the Eastern Conference; he’s averaged 36 points per game so far, second in the association behind only Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
The Spurs looks to remain undefeated when they play the Toronto Raptors at home Monday evening, the capper to the Silver & Black’s first back-to-back of the season.
