Wendy Nosal wins KENS 5 EXCEL Award for Comal ISD

Wendy Nosal of Comal ISD was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from Credit Human.

SAN ANTONIO — It was a morning full of cheers, drums and a big surprise at Davenport High School, where math teacher Wendy Nosal was honored as a KENS 5 EXCEL Award winner.

With the cheer squad and drumline helping set the scene, Nosal was presented with a $2,000 check from our partners at Credit Human as part of the KENS 5 EXCEL Award.

Nosal has been teaching for 17 years and specializes in math. She also serves as a National Honor Society advisor on campus.

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Last year, Mrs. Nosal was named Teacher of the Year at Davenport High School and was also honored as the district-wide Teacher of the Year for Comal Independent School District.

But Nosal didn’t originally plan to become a teacher.

She began her journey by homeschooling her own children through elementary and middle school. Afterward, she started substitute teaching math and quickly discovered her calling.

“Every student has the potential to learn,” EXCEL Award Winner, Wendy Nosal said. “And a lot of kids, especially at the high school level, I see a lot of kids who’ve already decided they can’t, or ‘math is just too hard,’ or ‘I’m not a math person’… But everybody has it in them and a lot of times it just takes helping the students see that possibility for them to put in that extra effort.”

Nosal says building relationships with students is just as important as teaching formulas and equations. She makes it a priority to get to know her students on a personal level and understand what motivates them.

Her students say that effort shows.

“She’s just like so personal. And she really goes in-depth for every topic. She wants everybody to be able to understand,” said senior Alana Stanford.

“Everyone loves her and she’s like known as the sweetest teacher on campus,” said senior, Gavin Galicia.

Nosal says she loves her job and her students and she hopes to continue teaching for many years to come.

As for the $2,000 award from Credit Human, Mrs. Nosal says she plans to put most of it right back into her classroom. She and her husband may also treat themselves to a nice dinner to celebrate the surprise honor.
