SAN ANTONIO — A morning stroll took a deadly turn for a San Antonio area couple. Two days before Thanksgiving, DPS reports a truck hit Jason and April Maldonado. The mother of four was killed. Jason, a San Antonio Parks Police Officer, survived and is now a single parent.
April’s sister, Roxane Marines, said the family is surrounded by love, from the community, and even by a group called the San Antonio Bills Backers.
“We are all just devastated and stunned,” Marines said. “I never thought of losing my sister.”
On Nov. 26, April and Jason were out on their walk right before 10:30 in the morning when their lives changed forever. DPS said a 35-year-old driver in an F-250 was traveling westbound on County 375 and veered toward the shoulder and hit the couple.
Family friend Corey Wroblewski knows the couple through the group San Antonio Bills Backers. It is a fan group of the Buffalo Bills.
“There are not sidewalks,” he said. “But, they were not walking in the street.”
April, a loving mother and Bexar County Probation Officer, died from her injuries.
“It is just so hard, really to understand that she is not here,” her sister said. “She was the most wonderful mother that you could imagine.”
As for Jason, family and friends said he has fractured ribs, a pelvis, and his right leg was shattered.
“They are both so caring and loving individuals that care about their community,” Wroblewski said.
Wroblewski said San Antonio Bills Backers is more than just a love for the Buffalo Bills, but a group that gives back to the community. April and Jason recently just helped raise toys for the Blue Santa Program. Jason is even known, in the group, as a persona of Dia Billo.
“This whole thing is just so horrible,” he said. “It is a tragedy.”
The couple’s four kids now are left without a mother, but they’re staying strong. The oldest is a high school senior, the youngest is ten. Their aunt said she is making sure they’re surrounded by love.
“My main priority is that they feel comfortable, safe, and loved and cared for,” she said.
As for the driver, DPS didn’t release any other information only the age and added that the investigation is ongoing.
If you would like to help the family, there is a GoFundMe and Meal Train.
