West-side shooting initially reported as drive-by now believed to be accidental, police say

A 16-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the leg on the city’s west side, San Antonio police officials said. Here’s what we know about the incident.

SAN ANTONIO — A shooting initially reported as a drive-by on the city’s west side is now believed to have been an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound involving a teenage boy, according to San Antonio police.

Officers were called to the intersection of North Spring and Gould Street around 9 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a shooting. When police arrived, a 16-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Police said the teen initially told officers a black vehicle drove past the intersection and someone inside fired shots before fleeing westbound. The teen was unable to provide a description of the vehicle or its occupants and said he did not know why he would have been targeted.

After further investigation, police said Wednesday that the circumstances had changed and the shooting was determined to be accidental.

Authorities now believe the teen accidentally shot himself. He was treated by emergency medical personnel and transported to University Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Police said he was in stable condition.

KENS 5 learned through sources that the 16-year-old is on probation and will go before a judge in juvenile court at a future date.
