West-side standoff ends with arrest of 3 teenagers after alleged car theft spree

Three teens have been arrested and are facing charges of aggravated robbery among other charges, according to jail records.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police say three people were arrested after a standoff at a west-side home Thursday.

Leadup to the standoff began after a string of car thefts in the morning.

SAPD said the crime spree began at around 6 a.m., when officers received reports of three suspects breaking into cars on the west side. Officials said the suspects are believed to be connected to a dozen different burglary, aggravated robbery and stolen vehicle calls just on Thursday, as well as other robberies from earlier in the week.

In one incident, police said the owner of a vehicle came out to confront the suspects. That’s when one of them pulled a gun on the car owner.

According to SAPD, officers made their way to a home on the 1200 block of Westlyn Drive, a location well-known to law enforcement for reports of disturbances and stolen vehicles.

Police spotted the suspects in a stolen vehicle before they bailed and ran into the home where they barricaded, prompting a response from SWAT.

Police said 18-year-old Lincoln Mertins fled from the location before being tracked down by officers and taken into custody nearby.

19-year-old Adrian Hernandez and 19-year-old Oscar Carvajal remained inside the home with several other people.

Eventually everyone was removed from the home and Hernandez and Carvajal were arrested.

According to jail records, Mertins faces charges of theft of property more than $30,000 but less than $150,000, evading arrest, unlawful carrying of weapon, tampering with physical evidence, burglary of vehicles and aggravated robbery.

Hernandez faces charges of burglary of vehicles, failure to identify giving false information and aggravated robbery, according to jail records.

Carvajal only faces an aggravated robbery charge.
