Kendrick Perkins stirred controversy by likening himself to the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama.
SAN ANTONIO — There are no comparisons when it comes to San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama and what he does on the floor. His unique skills on both ends of the court, given his height and length, make him one-of-a-kind.
But don’t tell that to ESPN’s NBA Analyst Kendrick Perkins.
Following a recent Spurs win over the Mavericks, the former NBA big man spoke on Wembanyama’s stance that he will not be pigeonhole into what a traditional center should do in the league.
That’s when, surprisingly, Perkins compared the Spurs All-Star’s mindset to his own when he was playing.
“Victor Wembanyama, he refuses to let us put him in a box, right? Like people was complaining that we want him to go more inside, he took those tray balls yesterday, and he’s knocking them down,” he said. “He’s a prime example of me. While everybody else is going right, I typically go left. And that’s what he does.”
Needless to say, his remarks drew backlash, with some Spurs fans laughing at them.
To be fair, Perkins hopped on social media to clarify his comments about himself and Wemby.
“I usually don’t respond because I “KNOW” what this platform is all about… but let’s not try to get it clicks here. No way in hell I was comparing myself to Wemby for ask basketball. My comp was in general…. Meaning he’s not the one to “Follow” the crowd!!!!”
But this did not stop fans from dogpiling on his comments.
Despite his clarification, it still seems like he’s comparing himself to Wembanyama, even though there’s no statistical comparison.
Not by a long shot!
