What Father’s Day means to Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and coach Brian Schottenheimer

For quarterback Dak Prescott, this Father’s Day holds special meaning as it’s his first as a father of two young daughters.

DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys may be focused on Sundays in the fall, but there’s one Sunday in June that brings a different kind of celebration — and emotion — for members of the team.

For quarterback Dak Prescott, this Father’s Day holds special meaning as it’s his first as a father of two young daughters.

“I’m blessed. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to raise two girls alongside my fiancée,” Prescott said. “It’s just about being grateful and not taking a moment for granted when I’m with them.”

While fatherhood can dramatically change one’s outlook on life, Prescott noted his past experiences with grief and hardship — the loss of his mom to cancer and one of his brothers to suicide — as moments that had already altered his perspective on life.

“I understand the love my mom had for me in a different way now that I have kids,” he said. “But I think when you’ve had some adversity like I’ve had, you’re so thankful. You’re so thankful for everything that you’re given. The good and the bad… Fatherhood’s no different. It just makes me even more focused on the small moments.”

Brand new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer will also be celebrating Father’s Day with his two kids who are both teenagers. But his thoughts will also be with his late father: legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, who passed away in 2021.

“I know he’s proud. I miss him,” Schottenheimer said, pausing to compose himself. “I would tell him that I used all the life lessons that he taught me. Not just about football but about life, and being a good man and a good husband and a good father.”

While the Cowboys continue to prepare for the rigors of the upcoming season, Father’s Day offers a reminder that legacy isn’t just built on wins and losses — but how you treat people and the values passed from one generation to the next.
