‘What happened to my daughter?’ | Family of 1-year-old killed in daycare crash says they were never told driver was cleared

On Monday, a spokesperson with BSCO told KENS 5 the investigation into the crash had concluded and the driver was cleared of all charges from the Dec. 2024 incident.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — The parents of a 1-year-old girl killed in a crash outside a Fair Oaks daycare say they were never informed that the driver involved had been cleared of criminal charges, despite assurances from investigators that the families were notified.

Mkaya Amrani and her teacher, Alexia Rosales, were killed on Dec. 19, 2024, when a vehicle slammed through a fenced-in play area at Montessori Plus Daycare. Investigators with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that the driver appeared to be experiencing a medical episode when they lost control and crashed into another vehicle, then the fenced-in area.

Nearly a year later, Mkaya’s parents say they still don’t have answers.

“She was an angel. She was literally what every parent wants their daughter to be,” Mkaya’s father, Pibo Amrani, said. “She just loved everything cute… and it’s very hard to think that she’s not around anymore.”

Amrani said the family has struggled to move forward, keeping all of Mkaya’s belongings exactly where they were the day she died.

“We have not even emptied her closet yet,” he said. “We have everything she used to play with.”

When KENS 5 contacted the sheriff’s office for an update, a spokesperson confirmed the investigation had concluded and that the driver was cleared of criminal wrongdoing. BCSO also stated that both victims’ families had been notified.

The Amrani family disputes that. They said their attorney has been requesting a meeting with investigators to learn what evidence they examined to determine it was truly an accident.

“We still have a lot of questions about the truth behind the driver’s condition,” Amrani said.

The family said they have seen one surveillance clip of the crash but that it did not provide them clarity about what led up to the crash.

“I would be more than happy to meet with them and just find out what happened that day,” Amrani said. “What happened to my daughter? Just to get information. To get some closure.”
