Thousands have chipped in with search and recovery efforts after the July Fourth floods in the Hill Country. More are expected Saturday.
SAN ANTONIO — Kerrville officials have established Tivy Antler Stadium as the official registration site for those wanting to help with search and recovery efforts this weekend, when the city says it’s expecting a “large number spontaneous volunteers.”
At least 161 people remain unaccounted for after the July Fourth floods that tore through the Texas Hill Country, sending vehicles slamming into each other and ripping homes from their foundations as residents along the Guadalupe River fought to get to higher ground.
As of Friday evening, at least 103 bodies have been recovered in the Kerr County area.
The disaster was followed by what officials have called a “tremendous” amount of volunteer help to search for the missing, keep first responders fed and provide other services. Nim Kidd, chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, said in a roundtable with President Donald Trump and others on Friday that more than 12,300 volunteers have given their time across Kerr County.
At the same time, officials across the region have urged volunteers to check in first, both for their own safety and to ensure the same areas aren’t covered multiple times.
Tivy Antler Stadium is located at 1310 Sidney Baker. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and volunteers are asked to register ahead of arrival here. After getting to the stadium, they’ll sign waivers and sit through a brief safety session before setting out.
“This organized effort will help ensure a safe and effective response as the community comes together to support neighbors in need,” Kerrville PD wrote on Facebook.
