TxDOT crews resume work on the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project this weekend, causing highway closures for drivers.
SAN ANTONIO — After taking last weekend off for July Fourth, TxDOT crews will return to working on the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, resulting in highway closures drivers should know about.
There are three primary closures to make note of.
U.S. 281 Northbound at Loop 1604
Drivers wanting to continue heading north on 281 will exit at Henderson Pass to access the frontage road, TxDOT says.
They’ll then turn right to briefly head down the Loop 1604 Eastbound frontage road, turn around at Gold Canyon Road, drive down the frontage road on the opposite side and re-enter 281 Northbound at the first ramp just before Redland.
U.S. 281 Southbound at Loop 1604
Drivers looking to continue heading south on 281 will effectively have to do the mirror-opposite as northbound drivers, just in the other direction. They’ll have to exit just before 1604 at Redland Road, turn right to head down the Loop 1604 Westbound frontage road and turn around at Stone Oak Parkway.
Drivers will then turn right onto the 281 frontage road and re-enter the highway at the first ramp, just past Donella Drive.
Loop 1604 Westbound at U.S. 281
Those heading west on 1604 and wanting to continue past 281 will have to exit and head down the access road until they’re past the highway, then re-enter 1604 Westbound at the first ramp before Stone Oak Parkway.
Those heading eastbound on Loop 1604 will be able to remain on the highway through the 281 interchange.
The closures last from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers are encouraged to look for detours.
The $1.5 billion expansion project expected to continue through at least 2028 is adding lanes to turn Loop 1604 on the north side into a “10-lane expressway.” It’s also adding direct connector roads, an HOV lane in each direction, and additional accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians.
