San Antonio drivers, rejoice! TxDOT is preparing for its final weekend closure of the year at the major northwest-side intersection.
SAN ANTONIO — Good news for those trying to get to store on the northwest side for their Christmas shopping this year: After this weekend, you won’t have any construction-related issues at the Loop 1604/Interstate 10 interchange.
The Texas Department of Transportation is capping off a year that saw five new ramps open up to drivers at the intersection as part of the ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. And while there will occasionally be nightly closures in December, this weekend marks the final time you’ll have to deal with orange cones and frontage-road detours in that particular segment of the project.
The best news? Starting Dec. 19, there will be no closures until work resumes on Jan. 4.
Here’s what to expect over the next few days.
All weekend
The following closures at the interchange are scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday all the way through 5 a.m. Monday, when crews will be working on bridge construction.
- Loop 1604 West exit ramp to Loop 1604 West frontage road before interchange.
- Loop 1604 main right lane closed in both directions at the interchange.
- Loop 1604 frontage road closed in both directions at the interchange.
- I-10 closed in both directions at the interchange.
Overnight Friday and Saturday morning
The following closures at the interchange are scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday until noon on Saturday.
- I-10 West frontage road closed from the entrance ramp north of the interchange to La Cantera Parkway.
- I-10 West exit ramp closed to La Cantera Parkway.
About the project
Construction work is currently underway on five of six segments of the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, managed by the Texas Department of Transportation.
The project, which began in 2021, is turning a 23-mile stretch of Loop 1604 on the north side into a 10-lane expressway featuring HOV lanes in both directions; increased accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians on frontage roads; more direct connectors; and improved intersections.
The Loop 1604/I-10 interchange is experiencing a massive makeover as part of the project, with at least one more flyover opening for business by the end of 2026. One of the new flyovers, at 128 feet high, is the tallest in San Antonio.
