What we know about the SAPD officers shot on the far west side Wednesday

The two unidentified officers shot by a man officials say was taunting them were discharged from the hospital by Wednesday night.

SAN ANTONIO — Two San Antonio police officers who authorities say were shot by a man who had been taunting them just moments before were released from the hospital and are recovering, representatives of the local police union told KENS 5.

The officers injured in Wednesday morning’s incident outside a hotel on the far west side, in the area of Highway 90 and West Military Drive, have not been identified. But Danny Diaz, president of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association, said they were discharged just hours later on Wednesday night.

Officers initially responded to the scene around 8:34 a.m. in response to a 911 call made by a woman. The suspect, who also hasn’t been identified, confronted officers and told them “I am not going back to jail” before opening fire on them, Chief William McManus said shortly after the shooting.

Two of them were hit; those officers, along with a third, returned fire and fatally hit the man.

McManus said all the officers who fired their weapons had an average service time of “five to six years” with the police department. In a post on X, the police chief referred to the officers hospitalized after the incident as “very brave,” adding “we’re fortunate to have officers like these as members of SAPD.”
