San Antonio drivers face nightly lane closures due to ongoing I-35 expansion construction.
SAN ANTONIO — Drivers on the northeast side of San Antonio continue to be frustrated by the ongoing construction to expand I-35.
TxDOT says the I-35 expansion project will improve the stretch of the highway from Loop 410 to north of Loop 1604. Road work kicked off in the summer of 2024. Since then, drivers have dealt with nightly closures where I-35 is down to only one lane in some parts.
The total project is expected stretch over 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103. The project will include the construction of two non-toll 15-mile long bridges (elevated lanes) between the I-35 main lanes and frontage roads from I-410 South to FM 3009. The elevated lanes will provide one high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane and two general purpose lanes in each direction, TxDOT says.
The elevated bridges will be constructed between the existing I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads and is expected to alleviate a lot of traffic currently on that stretch. Those elevated lanes will provide direct connections to I-410 North and Loop 1604 West.

The current project is known as the Central Project and is one of five I-35 projects either planned or completed by TxDOT. The Central Project is expected to finished in late 2027. The total cost of the Central project will be $1.5 billion, according to the agency.
TxDOT advises all drivers to keep track of daily and weekly traffic closures by following the agency’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
