Witness recounts fiery scene after crash on northeast-side sparks big rig explosion

SAFD officials say that all occupants made it out of their vehicles.

SAN ANTONIO — An accident involving a vehicle and a truck ended with a large fire on the northeast side of town early Monday morning.

It happened around 7 a.m. on Northeast Loop 410 near Wehman Drive.

KENS 5 viewer Juan Flores at United Rentals shared this video with us.

Juan Flores said he was just beginning his work day at United Rentals on NE Loop 410 when he saw a big, billowing column of black smoke rising from near the front of his shop.

“I started walking towards the front and as I’m getting closer and closer I notice an 18 wheeler completely engulfed in fire,”  Flores said, adding that what happened next was scary enough to make people jump.

“We just hear this big explosion of the truck. It scared us because we didn’t know what it was. It could have been a tire.  It could have been the fuel tanks,” Flores said.

Flores said he called for help immediately.

“I called 911 and I told them what was going on and I told them the power lines were engulfed in fire and also phone and internet,” he said.

Flores said he and his co-workers checked on the people involved in a collision between the big rig and a small sedan.

“I talked to the driver of the truck, and I asked him if he was okay. He seems to be okay,” said Flores.

Flores said the driver of the car declined to be treated by EMS and called someone for a ride as their damaged car was towed away.

Transguide cameras showed traffic backed up as a result of the accident as smoke could be seen billowing from the vehicles.

The freeway was closed for a time as wreckage was hauled away and crews were called in to repair damage to utility lines in the area.

SAFD officials say that all occupants made it out of their vehicles.

Police have not released preliminary information about what caused the crash but with the possibility of more storms in the forecast they said now is a good time to slow down and be cautious on the roads.
