“We would have went in… But we couldn’t. We couldn’t even get close,” said Diana Ramirez and Nancy Murray.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Cries for help were heard as a home burned down in far south Bexar County Monday night, claiming the life of a 5th grade student.
We spoke with witnesses who say they heard the boy’s grandmother, Santa Sanchez’s screams for help after the fire broke out.
The witnesses say they felt useless as the home went up in flames and say if they could have gone in to save the 11-year-old boy, they would have.
“You can just hear her crying and yelling, ‘He’s in there,'” said Diana Ramirez.
Ramirez says it was heartbreaking to hear the screams from a grandmother, after her 11-year-old grandson was trapped inside the mobile home located on the 20000 block of Spanish Grant Road.
“We noticed that the trailer was on fire but on the windows, that’s when we saw the flame,” said Ramirez.
Ramirez and her sister, Nancy Murray ran to the home but say it was too late.
“We would have went in. We would have but we couldn’t. We couldn’t even get close,” said Ramirez and Murray.
Authorities say an 11-year-old boy died in the fire.
Southside Independent School District confirmed the boy was a 5th grade student at Heritage Elementary School.
Ramirez says her cousins, rode the bus with the boy.
“He was just a very quiet little boy on the bus,” said Ramirez.
A memorial with flowers and balloons has been setup in front of the home which was a total loss.
“They said that he loved Spiderman, that was his favorite,” said Ramirez.
The Bexar County Medical Examiners Office has not released the identity of the boy and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire and hearing the calls for help from the boy’s grandmother have shaken up Ramirez and Murray, who say the situation is a tragedy.
“Take care of your children, hold them, love them as much as you can, because you never know what will happen from one minute to the next,” said Murray.
